Our Name
Riva: "shore" or "bank". The shore of a lake, river, or sea, or the land along the edge of it. (Translated from Italian)
Private investment and time at sea have been intertwined for thousands of years. For example, the concept of carried interest traces back to the maritime republic of Venice during the Middle Ages, dating back to the 11th century. During this period, wealthy merchants would hire ship captains to transport and sell their goods across the Mediterranean. Upon their return, the captain would receive 20% of the profit from these carried goods as compensation.
In these joint venture agreements of the Middle Ages, both parties participated in the profit because of the inherent risk of these voyages. At sea, the captain faced the risk of shipwreck, storms, and poor navigation. Back on land, the merchants risked their goods to shipwreck, pirates, and theft by the hired captain.
Considering these risks, the Riva (where the sea and the land meet) became paramount for success. It was at the Riva where the parties agreed to a structure which ensured mutual interest in current and future ventures. It was at the Riva where they coordinated routes and forecasted weather patterns to decrease the chance of shipwreck. And, it was at the Riva where the captain returned to share in the profits with merchant partners.
